NYSC To Include Date Of Birth On Discharge Certificate

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it has decided to henceforth include the date of birth of corps members on the certificate of national service as a measure to guard against age falsification.

In a statement, the NYSC Director-General, Brig Shuaibu Ibrahim, stated that the scheme observed that some tertiary institutions were guilty of presenting over-aged graduates for mobilisation.

According to him, the rising number of corps-producing institutions and the “attendant rise in corps members’ population pose a great challenge which we must address.”

He said, “We have observed that some institutions present over-aged graduates for mobilisation. Such graduates falsify their age in order to avoid appearing on the exemption list. Such act will not be condoned and the scheme will not hesitate to apply appropriate sanctions on any institution involved.

“As a further step toward curtailing age falsification, we have decided to include date of birth on the certificate of national service and exclusion letter. This is just as in the case of the WAEC certificate and the NYSC Exemption Certificate. We also plan to carry out advocacy to encourage other examination bodies to adopt the same approach.

“We have also observed cases of suspected connivance whereby some accredited institutions help unaccredited ones to mobilise unqualified graduates. While the scheme will continue to sanction erring institutions, we are working on introducing a platform on the NYSC portal where the corps producing institution will be required to upload the list of their matriculated students every year.

“This will be used to eliminate the registration of persons whose names are presented for mobilisation but who are not found on the matriculation list.”

2019 Budget Should Drive Employment, Education - CITN Boss

The PRESIDENT, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, CITN, Dr. Cyril Ede, has at the 40th induction ceremony of the institute  held at NECA house, Ikea said that employment opportunities, educational standard will increase if the right policies were put in place.

In his words

“It is on this note I present the institute’s recommendations towards identified issues in the 2019 Federal Government budget.

“There is potential for the government to increase productivity by investing in education with an emphasis on quality over quantity.

“The economy requires an average of five million new jobs annually to reverse the unemployment trajectory that has subsisted over the years. To achieve this, the economy needs to grow at an inclusive growth rate between 5% and 6 % per annum.

“Deliberate policies should be activated to drive economic growth.

“The budget should inspire hope and not only on the churn of figures. It can do better in assuring Nigerians of the reversal in the observed gale of unemployment.”

More so, the budget ought to detail a plan of action beyond the statement of incomes and expenditures.”

Ghanaian University Reportedly Offers $40,000 Scholarship To JAMB 2019 Best Student

Academic City College, a private university in Accra, Ghana, has reportedly offered a scholarship worth $40,000 to Ekene Franklin Ezeunala, the candidate who scored 347, the highest score in the just concludes 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The College's Senior Admissions Manager (Nigeria), Mrs Ogechi Ekpe, said on the sidelines of a workshop organised by the institution for schools and parents at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, at the weekend that the scholarship would cover tuition and boarding for the duration of his programme at the university.

“We have a full scholarship for Ekene. He was supposed to be here today (Friday) but we did not talk about the scholarship today because he was not here. We were to present a scholarship of $40,000 to the boy from year one till he graduates,” she said.

When asked how Ekene would be informed about the scholarship since he was not at the event, Mrs Ekpe said: “We were hoping he would be here today so our President can give him the award. The school is here now. We have to go there and see if we can either take him to Ghana or get our President to come again and give him the scholarship. The scholarship is for real. It is called the Presidential Scholarship so the school pays everything including the hostel fees.”
Ekene, Jamb 2019 Best Student

Ekene, who turns 15 (Monday), is below 16, the minimum age benchmark to gain admission into his preferred choice, the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), also stipulates 16 years as the minimum age for candidates to take the examination during the admission year they apply. However, in spite of the rule in place, many private varsities in Nigeria accept students who are less than 16.
