NYSC To Include Date Of Birth On Discharge Certificate

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it has decided to henceforth include the date of birth of corps members on the certificate of national service as a measure to guard against age falsification.

In a statement, the NYSC Director-General, Brig Shuaibu Ibrahim, stated that the scheme observed that some tertiary institutions were guilty of presenting over-aged graduates for mobilisation.

According to him, the rising number of corps-producing institutions and the “attendant rise in corps members’ population pose a great challenge which we must address.”

He said, “We have observed that some institutions present over-aged graduates for mobilisation. Such graduates falsify their age in order to avoid appearing on the exemption list. Such act will not be condoned and the scheme will not hesitate to apply appropriate sanctions on any institution involved.

“As a further step toward curtailing age falsification, we have decided to include date of birth on the certificate of national service and exclusion letter. This is just as in the case of the WAEC certificate and the NYSC Exemption Certificate. We also plan to carry out advocacy to encourage other examination bodies to adopt the same approach.

“We have also observed cases of suspected connivance whereby some accredited institutions help unaccredited ones to mobilise unqualified graduates. While the scheme will continue to sanction erring institutions, we are working on introducing a platform on the NYSC portal where the corps producing institution will be required to upload the list of their matriculated students every year.

“This will be used to eliminate the registration of persons whose names are presented for mobilisation but who are not found on the matriculation list.”

NYSC DG Warns Institutions To Stop Mobilizing Over Aged Graduates

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Director-General Shuaibu Ibrahim has warned some tertiary institutions to stop presenting over-aged graduates for mobilisation for service.

He said the scheme has observed that some tertiary institutions present over-aged graduates for its mobilisation, noting that the NYSC would not hesitate to apply appropriate sanctions.

According to him, the increase in number of corps producing institutions and the attendant rise in corps members population posed a great challenge which we must address.

Ibrahim said: “It has been observed that the Students’ Affairs Officers do not commence early upload of their master lists despite the long period the NYSC portal is opened for this purpose. Many wait till a few days to the close of the portal before rushing to meet up with the deadline, thereby making a lot of mistakes in the process.

“We have observed that some corps producing institutions present over-aged graduates for mobilisation.

“Such graduates falsify their ages in order to avoid appearing on the exemption list. Such act will not be condoned and the scheme will not hesitate to apply appropriate sanctions on any institution involved.

He also said the scheme has observed that some accredited institutions help unaccredited ones to mobilise unqualified graduates for service.

He informed that the NYSC was working on a platform where corps producing institution would be require to upload the list of their matriculated students every year.

2019 Budget Should Drive Employment, Education - CITN Boss

The PRESIDENT, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, CITN, Dr. Cyril Ede, has at the 40th induction ceremony of the institute  held at NECA house, Ikea said that employment opportunities, educational standard will increase if the right policies were put in place.

In his words

“It is on this note I present the institute’s recommendations towards identified issues in the 2019 Federal Government budget.

“There is potential for the government to increase productivity by investing in education with an emphasis on quality over quantity.

“The economy requires an average of five million new jobs annually to reverse the unemployment trajectory that has subsisted over the years. To achieve this, the economy needs to grow at an inclusive growth rate between 5% and 6 % per annum.

“Deliberate policies should be activated to drive economic growth.

“The budget should inspire hope and not only on the churn of figures. It can do better in assuring Nigerians of the reversal in the observed gale of unemployment.”

More so, the budget ought to detail a plan of action beyond the statement of incomes and expenditures.”

According to him, “For places where we have security challenges, corps members were not posted to those areas. I have five points’ agenda which I have ruled out during the handing over process. I will rejuvenate the ventures and SAED, Skills Acquisition and Technology. “The President is ready to support us to make sure that corps members acquire skills so that they can also become employers of  labour.

Corps Members

On her part, the director of Corps Mobilisation, Mrs Nnnenna Ukonu, said the workshop was important for the mobilisation exercise as well as to identify challenges corps members face during mobilization with a view to proffering solutions to them.

Student: Someone said to me "Go Back!"

A student of Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) identified as valentine racheal oparacha was reported to have fainted at  Hostel C. Valentine Rachael Oparacha from Department of Biochemistry slumped & passed out.

According to eyewitness 'Chiamaka Obumma', who is currently the institution's Governor for hostel C, she wrote;

"God performed a miracle in FUTO on Sunday evening as a student slumped and was gasping for breath until she stopped breathing, and then came back to life

Valentine Rachael Oparacha, a 200 level student in the Biochemistry Department, finished doing her laundry. All of a sudden, she slumped and began to lose her breath gradually until she stopped breathing. Girls in the hostel rushed out. There was so much pandemonium as Hostel C was overcrowded with girls. They tried carrying her but she was too big and heavy. They began looking for boys to come help in carrying her to Federal University of Technology, Owerri FUTO Medicals. Finally, they got people who carried her to Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO Medicals. Then, tragedy struck!

When they got to Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO Medical Centre, the doctor and nurses were confused because already in coma and she wasn't breathing. Her body was so cold to the point that they couldn't find any vein to place her on drip. The doctor began to hit her left chest severally until her heart started beating again.

Three days before the unfortunate event, she had a revelation. She told her friend to pray against death not knowing it was meant for her. So on Sunday when she passed out, she said she found her soul in a dark place in the midst of dead people.

She was already in the underworld in Hades until someone said to her: "Go back!" Then she woke up from coma. This is a miracle. God sent her back to warn people about the Judgment Day."

Ghanaian University Reportedly Offers $40,000 Scholarship To JAMB 2019 Best Student

Academic City College, a private university in Accra, Ghana, has reportedly offered a scholarship worth $40,000 to Ekene Franklin Ezeunala, the candidate who scored 347, the highest score in the just concludes 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The College's Senior Admissions Manager (Nigeria), Mrs Ogechi Ekpe, said on the sidelines of a workshop organised by the institution for schools and parents at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, at the weekend that the scholarship would cover tuition and boarding for the duration of his programme at the university.

“We have a full scholarship for Ekene. He was supposed to be here today (Friday) but we did not talk about the scholarship today because he was not here. We were to present a scholarship of $40,000 to the boy from year one till he graduates,” she said.

When asked how Ekene would be informed about the scholarship since he was not at the event, Mrs Ekpe said: “We were hoping he would be here today so our President can give him the award. The school is here now. We have to go there and see if we can either take him to Ghana or get our President to come again and give him the scholarship. The scholarship is for real. It is called the Presidential Scholarship so the school pays everything including the hostel fees.”
Ekene, Jamb 2019 Best Student

Ekene, who turns 15 (Monday), is below 16, the minimum age benchmark to gain admission into his preferred choice, the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), also stipulates 16 years as the minimum age for candidates to take the examination during the admission year they apply. However, in spite of the rule in place, many private varsities in Nigeria accept students who are less than 16.

ABOUT JAMB CAPS

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) is geared towards ensuring quality control, transparency and credibility of the admission process.

CAPS is expected to make provision for a ‘market place’ in the JAMB portal where institutions can go and ‘request for students in Nigeria who score their cut off points.’

JAMB Announces Admissions for 200,000 Candidates.

The Joint Admission And Matriculation Board (JAMB) has anounced that it has offered 200,000 admissions to successfull candidates by the board, for the 2018/2019 academic session.

Over 1.6 million candidates wrote JAMB-organised 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The Head, Media and Information of the JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos, said that the admission took effect after the board’s policy meeting in June in Gbongan, Osun state.

According to him, the exercise is done through the Central Admission Process (CAP), an automated process to eliminate all human interference.

“We have so far offered not less than 200,000 first choice admissions to candidates.

“To this effect therefore, we are urging candidates to go to our site and check their admission status and those who have been offered such admission should quickly indicate by accepting and printing such offer, as failure to do so will automatically mean the candidate is no longer interested.

“And therefore, the board may see all such offers as rejected and would have no option than to mop them up and give it to other interested candidates.

“Candidates are to accept or reject all offers not later than Oct.16 as that is when all offers of admissions of first choice will close.

“After that, we will commence admission exercise for the second choice of candidates,” Benjamin said.

He added that the admission process has been made easy as it is clear on the board’s official website, all what the candidates need to know about their admission status and process.
